AUGUSTANA WINS SEVENTH STRAIGHT CCIW TITLE AS AARON GRANELL BECOMES 13TH WRESTLER TO WIN FOUR STRAIGHT INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP
DECATUR, Illinois – Aaron Granell won his fourth straight individual championship at 197 pounds to lead Augustana College to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin wrestling title on February 14 at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. Augustana, which has won a total of 36 team titles, scored 91.5 to win its seventh straight while host Millikin placed second with 78.5 and North Central was third with 64.
Granell beat Justin Ruggio of North Central 5-2 at 197 pounds and in the process became just the 13th wrestler in CCIW history to win four individual league titles. He was one of four Augustana wrestlers to win individual weight classes with the others being Larry Amedio (141), Ryan McMurray (149) and Brian Daly (165). The Vikings had two second place finishes and four third in giving head coach Pat Marsh the fourth title of his tenure.
Millikin crowned a pair of champions, winning the lightest weight class with Jim Fascetta at 125 and the heaviest when Bryan Morgan took home gold at 285.
Rick Lamas of Elmhurst was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Wrestler after dominating the 157 pound weight class. Lamas beat Mike Kerr of Augustana 16-7 in the semi-finals and then pinned Jacob Rodriguez of Millikin at 2:02 of the championship bout.
