2005 CCIW INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP
NORTH CENTRAL WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT TITLE AS SEVEN CONFERENCE RECORDS FALL
BLOOMINGTON, Illinois - The North Central Cardinals, on the strength of six champions, won the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin indoor track and field championship for the fifth consecutive year. Veteran head coach Al Carius’ crew won five individual events and one relay en route to piling up 186 points to far outdistance runner-up Carthage’s second place score of 126. Host Illinois Wesleyan was third with 117 while Augustana was fourth with 95.5. Wheaton (48.5), Elmhurst (42), Millikin (41) and North Park (6.5) rounded out the field that gathered in the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, February 26.
The Cardinals strength was once again in the middle and long distances as they won every event from the 800 on up. Julius White claimed the 800 in 1:55.94, Dan Rodriguez set a new conference record in the mile with a time of 4:19.90. This was the first time the mile has been contested as the 1500 had been run the previous four years. Pat Rizzo added the 5000 in 14:47.86, his second straight win at that distance. North Central also got a victory from its 1600 relay in 3:22.20. Brian DeLoriea cleared 15’ 4 ¼” to win the pole vault for the third consecutive year and Israel Brown took the triple jump with a leap of 44’ 11 ¾”.
Besides Rodriguez obvious record in the mile, six other meet records fell throughout the day. Matt Harden of Illinois Wesleyan won the 55 in a time of :06.43, erasing the time of :06.45 set by Millikin’s Corey Jefferson in 2002. Greg Memmesheimer of Carthage was a double winner, taking the 200 in :21.97 and the 400 in :49.24. His time in the 200 broke the old mark of :22.39 set by Jason Miller of Carthage in 2003. Zach Gorsage of Illinois Wesleyan won the 55 hurdles in a new record of :07.55, breaking the old one of :07.58 that was held jointly by Gorsage (2003) and Wheaton’s Ryan Rogers (2001).
Illinois Wesleyan’s 800 relay team of Azizuddin Rose, Mike Nicolette, Jake Clough and Tyler Neal set a new standard of 1:30.28, taking down the old one of 1;30.49 set by the North Central team of Mark Hawkinson, Ryan Jordan, Ryan Peterson and Matt Moran in 2001. Kyle Groth of Carthage won the high jump with a leap of 6’ 7 ½” and he broke John Hartmann of Elmhurst’s record of 6’ 7” set in 2001. Tom McIntire of Augustana won the 35 pound weight with a toss of 53’ 5 ¾”, breaking his own meet record of 52’ 10 ¼” set a year ago.
Besides running on the winning 800 relay, Neal also won the long jump with a leap of 22’ 6 ½” and Doug Cochrane of Augustana took the shot put with a toss of 51’ 10”. Wheaton won both the 3200 (8:01.86) and distance medley (10:23.35) relays.
