Day Three
Host Wheaton Captures CCIW Men’s & Women’s Swimming Titles
WHEATON, Ill. -- The Wheaton Thunder men’s and women’s swimming teams took an early lead two nights ago and never looked back as both earned the conference title at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimming Championships Saturday, hosted by Wheaton.
The women’s title was the 15th in school history and 10th straight dating back to 1998. The men’s title was the 25th in school history as the Thunder avenged last season’s second place finish to Carthage.
Kaitlin Marko of Wheaton and Zach Jole of Carthage were named most valuable swimmers, while Rob Myers of Wheaton and Ramsey Vens of Augustana were named outstanding participants. Jon Lederhouse of Wheaton and Teresa Fish of Illinois Wesleyan were named coach of the year on the men's side, while Lederhouse took the honor on the women's side.
The Wheaton women’s team won with a final team score of 940, followed by Carthage (723), Illinois Wesleyan (399), Augustana (364), Millikin (323) and North Central (124). On the men’s side, Wheaton’s winning score was 906.5, followed by Carthage (737.5), Illinois Wesleyan (497), Augustana (315.5), Millikin (260) and North Central (125.5).
The night began with the 1650-yard freestyle as Wheaton’s Kaitlin Marko won the women’s title with a time of 17:15.44. Carthage’s Bryan Peka won the men’s title with a time of 15:59.43. Both times were meet records as Marko topped the old mark of 17:24.84 by Becky Bird of Wheaton in 2005. Pelka beat his old record from a year ago when he finished the event with a time of 16:10.58.
Wheaton’s Ashley Matthiesen won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.55, while Wheaton’s John Higgins won on the men’s side with a time of 1:56.00. The 100-yard freestyle saw Wheaton’s Katherine Burt win with a time of 52.30, while Tim Linn of Wheaton won the men’s title (46.74).
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Wheaton’s Renee Shear earned the conference title with a time of 2:27.88. On the men’s side, Carthage’s Zach Jole won with a time of 2:04.56.
The Thunder’s Cherie Spears earned the title in the 200-yard fly (2:12.27), while on the men’s side, Wheaton’s Rob Morris won with a time of 1:54.09.
The championships concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Wheaton team of Jenna Sveen, Matthiesen, Spears and Burt won with a time of 3:31.80, beating the previous meet record of 3:34.18 by Illinois Wesleyan in 2003. The Wheaton men, featuring Linn, Paul Hartman, Morris and Higgins won with a time of 3:07.60.
Day Two
Wheaton Still Holds Lead after Second Day of CCIW Swimming Championships
WHEATON, Ill. -- Wheaton College finished day two of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimming Championships the same way it started: in first place.
The defending champion Wheaton women currently lead the way with a team score of 648, followed by Carthage (492), Illinois Wesleyan (258), Augustana (254), Millikin (208) and North Central (84). Wheaton also leads the way on the men’s side with a team score of 634.5, followed by Carthage (463.5), Illinois Wesleyan (313), Augustana (214.5), Millikin (193) and North Central (84.5).
The evening kicked off with the 200-yard medley relay as Wheaton’s Sloan Skinner, Renee Shear, Cherie Spears and Katherine Burt set a new meet record with a time of 1:48.61, topping the previous time of 1:49.82 set by Wheaton in 2003. On the men’s side, Carthage’s Justin Reeder, Zach Jole, Bryce Davis and Andy Bax won with a time of 1:34.50.
In the women’s 400-yard IM, Wheaton’s Kaitlin Marko won with a time of 4:35.01, which was also a new meet record, topping the old time of 4:35.38 set by Kathy Carroll of Illinois Wesleyan in 2002. Wheaton’s Ethan Cramer won on the men’s side with a time of 4:08.28. Spears was the conference champion in the 100-yard butterfly (59.08), while Davis from Carthage won on the men’s side (50.99).
Burt earned another medal in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.51), while Wheaton’s John Higgins won with a time of 1:42.03. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Jole broke his own conference meet record that he set last season, winning with a time of 56.62, topping his old mark of 56.79. Shear won the conference title on the women’s side, finishing first with a time of 1:08.92.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Augustana’s Ramsey Vens, who made a comeback this season after shattering two vertebrae in her neck over the summer, won the women’s title with a time of 59.89. Wheaton’s Doug Hoffer won the men’s title with a time of 53.44.
The final event on the evening was the 800-yard freestyle relay. Spears, Ashley Matthiesen, Marko and Jenna Sveen from Wheaton won the women’s title with a time of 7:56.19, while on the men’s side, Wheaton’s Ethan Cramer, Ken Mulsoff, Paul Hartman and John Higgins earned the title with a time of 6:58.03.
The final day of the championships begin Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. with the preliminaries of the women’s 200 backstroke. The finals start at 6 p.m. with the women’s 1650 freestyle.
Day One
Wheaton Men, Women Lead after First Day of CCIW Swimming Championships
WHEATON, Ill. -- Five events on both the men's and women's side were completed on the first day of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimming Championships with Wheaton leading the way for the men and women with two days left.
In the team standings, the Wheaton men currently hold the lead with a score of 264, followed by Carthage (207.50), Illinois Wesleyan (157), Millikin (74), Augustana (70) and North Central (35.50). The defending champion Wheaton women lead with a score of 293, followed by Carthage (189), Augustana (117), Illinois Wesleyan (108), Millikin (72) and North Central (36).
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Jenna Sveen, Bethany Jacobs, Esther Knicely and Katherine Burt from Wheaton teamed up to win the conference title in their respective event, finishing with a time of 1:36.68, breaking the conference meet record of 1:36.70 set by North Central in 2002. In the men’s 200 freestyle relay, Wheaton’s Jeremy Lederhouse, Rob Morris, Tim Linn and Paul Hartman won with a time of 1:24.09.
Wheaton took home titles in the 500-yard freestyle on both the men’s and women’s side as Katlin Marko and Ethan Kramer won with times of 5:06.91 and 4:40.31 respectively. In the 200-yard individual medley, Carthage’s Zach Jole won the men’s title with a time of 1:54.71, while Sloan Skinner from Wheaton was victorious on the women’s side (2:10.85).
In the 50-yard freestyle, Burt won with a time of 23.80, topping the previous meet record of 23.88 set by Maureen Szweda of North Central in 2002. On the men's side, Andy Bax of Carthage and Tim Linn from Wheaton both finished first with a time of of 21.24.
Day one ended with the 400-yard medley relay as Wheaton’s Ashley Matthiesen, Renee Shear, Cherie Spears and Burt won with a time of 3:57.77. The time was a new meet record, topping the mark of 4:00.47 set by Wheaton in 2005. On the men’s side, Carthage’s Justin Reeder, Jole, Bryce Davis and Bax won with a time of 3:28.94.
The second day of events begins at 10:30 a.m., Friday with the preliminaries of the women’s 400-yard individual medley. The finals begin at 6 p.m. with the women’s 200-yard medley relay.
