Wheaton wins ninth straight title

WHEATON, Illinois – Wheaton won the first four events of the meet, grabbed a 47 point lead after the first day and cruised to its ninth straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship. The Thunder jumped on the field early and kept up the pressure, eventually scoring 718 points to outdistance Carthage’s second place total of 611 by 107 points. The 200 freestyle relay team of Jeremy Lederhouse, Tim Linn, Phil Denby and Sam Gyorfi started things off with a victory in a time of 1:23.84 and Wheaton was well on its way to winning the league title for the 15th time in the last 16 years. John Higgins picked up a win in the 500 freestyle in 4:38.45, Tyler Dobelbower won the 200 individual medley in 1:53.22 and Sam Gyorfi powered home in the 50 freestyle to win in :21.11. Wheaton claimed a total of five individual titles and three relays with Higgins adding the 200 freestyle in 1:42.74 to his victory in the 500 freestyle. Paul Hartman won the 100 freestyle in :46.80 to account for the other Thunder win. Besides the 200 freestyle relay, the 800 freestyle relay of Higgins, Ken Musloff, Mike Waits and Hartman won in 6:56.44 and the 400 freestyle relay closed out the meet with a winning time of 3:05.86. Hartman, Ben Cramer, Gyorfi and Waits combined for that victory. Nathaniel Chapman of Carthage was named the Most Valuable Swimmer of the meet and for good reason. Chapman won the 400 individual medley in 4:07.22, the 100 backstroke in :52.60 and the 200 backstroke in 1:51.49. He also led off winning efforts in the 400 medley (3:27.17) and 200 medley (1:34.11) relays. He was joined in the 400 medley by Zach Jole, Henry Somers and Chris Illing and in the 200 medley by Jole, Somers and Edgar Vargas. Tyler Leehaug of Carthage won the 1650 freestyle in 16:17.85. Thomas Sur of Millikin was a double winner, claiming the 100 breaststroke in :57.34 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:04.62. Paul Yemm of Millikin won the 200 butterfly in 1:53.57 and Justin Gorson of Illinois Wesleyan took the 100 butterfly in :51.07. Jon Lederhouse of Wheaton was named the "Coach of the Year".
