2004 MEN’S SWIMMING

THANKS TO WINNING EFFORTS IN ALL FIVE RELAYS, WHEATON CLAIMS EIGHTH STRAIGHT TITLE AND 14TH IN 15 YEARS

KENOSHA, Wisconsin – The Wheaton College men’s swimming team continued its mastery of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, winning the league title for the eighth straight year and for the 14th time in the last 15 seasons. The Thunder of veteran head coach Jon Lederhouse won the team title with 602 points, nosing out host Carthage by just 17.5 points. It was the 23rd team in Wheaton history and Lederhouse has been at the helm for 20 of those.

Dominance in the relays keyed this victory as the Thunder won all five relay events. Jeremy Lederhouse, Paul Hartman, Philip Denby and Sam Gyorfi won the 200 freestyle in 1:24.53. Tyler Dobelbower, Dustin Guidry, Mark Anderson and Gyorfi took first in the 400 medley in 3:28.45 and the 200 medley team of Lederhouse, Guidry, Anderson and Gyorfi won with a time of 1:35.61. The 800 freestyle relay of Mark Anderson, Ben Cramer, Paul Hartman and Philip Denby claimed first in 6:59.33 and the 400 freestyle team of Hartman, Cramer, Denby and Gyorfi salted the meet away with a winning time of 3:06.89 in the last event.

Along with winning five relays, Wheaton picked up two individual victories. Gyorfi won the 50 freestyle in :21.41 and Hartman grabbed the 200 freestyle in 1:44.77.

Mark Schmitt of North Central was named the meet’s "Most Valuable Swimmer" after winning the 200 individual medley in 1:54.15, the 100 backstroke in :51.79 and the 200 backstroke in 1:50.74.

Paul Yemm of Millikin was a double winner in the butterfly events, winning the 100 in :51.76 and the 200 in 1:54.65. His teammate, Thomas Suhr, was also a double winner, taking both the breaststrokes, claiming the 100 in :57.57 and the 200 in 2:05.62.

Carthage’s run to second place was fueled by individual championship performances from Roberto Jorda-Cid, who won the 400 individual medley in 4:09.47 and Henry Somers, who claimed the 100 freestyle in :46.63.

Lederhouse and Greg Earhart of Carthage shared the Coach of the Year award and Dennis Ryan of North Central was named the Most Outstanding Participant.
