MILLIKIN HOSTS CCIW TOURNAMENT AFTER GRABBING 11TH LEAGUE TITLE
Millikin has secured the host position for the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women’s basketball tournament by virtue of its 72-60 victory at Carthage on Tuesday, February 22. The Big Blue, which has won the league a total of 11 times, including 10 of the last 12 years, actually finished in a tie for first with Wheaton. Both teams had identical 13-1 records in conference play with Millikin taking first place on the tiebreaker procedure that went all the way down to the fifth criteria. That was the record in the last nine games and the Big Blue was 9-0 while the Thunder went 8-1 over that same time period, the difference being a Millikin victory over Wheaton on February 8 in Decatur. Wheaton gets the second seed while Illinois Wesleyan (8-6 in the CCIW) is the third seed and Elmhurst (6-8) claims the fourth spot and makes the tournament for the first time in school history. The winner of the conference tournament will be awarded the automatic berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament. The league tournament gets underway at the Griswold Center on the Millikin campus on Friday, February 25 with Wheaton and Illinois Wesleyan squaring off in game one at 6:00 p.m. and Millikin taking on Elmhurst in game two at 8:00 p.m. The championship game is set for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 26.
