Millikin squeaks by Wheaton and Illinois Wesleyan in narrow vote for pre-season favorite in CCIW women's basketball race

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois - One year ago Millikin won the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women's basketball title by two games over Wheaton and Illinois Wesleyan. The Big Blue were 13-1 in league play and Wheaton and Illinois Wesleyan were tied for second with 11-3 records. According to the pre-season poll of the CCIW coaches, the 2001-02 race promises to be just as close.

Millikin, which was 23-3 overall, edged Wheaton and Illinois Wesleyan to gain the favorite's nod for the upcoming season. The Big Blue garnered three first place votes and 44 total points. Wheaton, which was 20-5 and 11-3 in 2000-01, picked up two first place votes and 43 total points. Illinois Wesleyan, 16-9 and 11-3, checked in with three first place votes and 42 points.

Behind those three there was quite a gap to fourth place, which was occupied by Augustana with 25 points. North Park (23), North Central (21), Carthage (19) and Elmhurst (7) rounded out the field.

The CCIW coaches all voted in this poll and they were not allowed to vote for their own teams.
