2005 - North Central wins 21st straight title
ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – North Central, getting individual title performances from a pair of freshmen, romped to an easy victory in the 2005 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men’s track & field championship on May 7 at Ericson Field/Alumni Track on the campus of Augustana College. The Cardinals scored 214 points to easily outdistance second place Carthage’s total of 150.5. Augustana (116.5), Wheaton (103.5), Illinois Wesleyan (97.5), Elmhurst (68), Millikin (61) and North Park (8) rounded out the field. It was the 21st straight conference title for veteran head coach Al Carius at North Central.
Freshman Jeff Sizemore was a double winner for the Cardinals, taking the long jump with a leap of 23’ 1 ¾” and the triple jump with a mark of 46’ 1 ¼”. Fellow frosh Adam Pennington joined Sizemore in the winner’s circle with a new CCIW record time of :47.77 in the 400. In all, North Central won 10 events. As is usually the case the Cardinals cleaned up on the track in the distance events, winning four of the five events over 800 meters. Julius White won the 800 in 1:53.00 and Andy Hubner took the 1500 in 3:56.55. Pat Rizzo grabbed the 5000 in 15:13.85 and Chris Bosworth won the 10,000 in 31:31.64. The only distance event not won by North Central was the 3000 steeplechase that was claimed by Wheaton’s Matt Field in 9:21.29.
Other Cardinal winners included Kyle Stumpenhorst in the javelin with a toss of 173’ 4”, Brian DeLoriea with a clearance of 16’ 6” in the pole vault and the 1600 relay with a time of 3:17.33.
The meet saw three new conference records. In addition to Pennington’s record breaking run in the 400, Tom McIntire of Augustana established a new CCIW mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 178’ 6” and the Illinois Wesleyan 400 relay team won with a new record of :41.50.
Matt Harden of Illinois Wesleyan was a double winner, taking the 100 in :10.75 and the 110 high hurdles in :14.65. His teammate Tyler Neal won the 200 in :21.72. Augustana got championship performances from Doug Cochrane in the shot put (49’ 3 ¾”) and David Winston in the 400 hurdles (:55.07). Millikin also had a pair of individual champions with Lance Brooks taking the discus with a toss of 164’ 11” and Jordan Thomas won the high jump with a leap of 6’ 7 ½”. Nate Mealy of Wheaton won the decathlon with 6,272 points.
