NORTH CENTRAL WINS 20TH CONSECUTIVE CCIW TITLE

BLOOMINGTON, Illinois – North Central used seven individual champions en route to winning a record 20th consecutive College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men’s outdoor track & field championship. The Cardinals of veteran head coach Al Carius scored 219 points to easily outdistance second place Augustana’s total of 149. Wheaton (125), Carthage (115), Millikin (97.5), Illinois Wesleyan (72), Elmhurst (24.5) and North Park (14)

As is usually the case, North Central cleaned up in the distance events, winning the 1500 (Andy Hubner – 3:56.19), 5000 (Andy Enright – 15:29.89) and 10,000 (Nick Hird – 31:46.25). The Cardinals also won both hurdle events with Brandon Strode taking the 110 highs in :14.56 and Brian Wright claiming the 400 intermediates in :56.21. In addition, Steve Schmidt won the long jump with a leap of 22'’4 1¼" and Kyle Stumpenhorst cleared 15’ 8 ¼" to win the pole vault.

Frank Taylor of Millikin was the lone individual double winner for the meet, which was held over the weekend of May 7-8 at Titan Stadium in Bloomington, Illinois on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University. Taylor won the 100 in :10.67 and the 200 in :21.76. He then added a leg on the Big Blue’s victorious 400 relay team that set a new meet record with a time of :41.60.

There was one other meet record set and that came in the hammer throw where Tom McIntire of Augustana won with a toss of 159’ 8" in the first year the event was contested on an official basis.
