Carthage Men, Wheaton Women Selected to Compete in NCAA Tournament
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The Carthage men's tennis team, fresh off a third straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship, and the Wheaton women's tennis squad, winners of the conference title in the fall, were both selected Monday by the NCAA to compete in the Division III Tournament.
Wheaton, who will make its first appearance in the NCAA Team Tournament since 2000, will compete in a Central Region site beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 5 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. The Thunder are 18-2 on the season and ranked 13th nationally. They will face No. 15 University of Chicago on Friday with the winner facing Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday. The winner of Saturday's match will advance to the eight-team National Championships on May 17-19 in Santa Cruz, California.
Carthage (22-4), ranked 19th in the April 17 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's NCAA Division III poll, will face Kenyon College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 6 at the Smeds Tennis Center in Kenosha, Wis. The winner of that match will face the winner of a match between Gustavus Adolphus and Coe at noon on Sunday, May 7. The winner advances to the NCAA Championships held May 17-22 in Fredericksburg, Va.
