Carthage men's & women's Tennis programs to compete at ncaa tournament
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The Carthage College men's and women's tennis teams will be representing the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) at the NCAA Tournament this weekend in Saint Peter, Minn., on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus.
The Carthage men's tennis team, fresh off a 17-5 season and winner of the CCIW title over the weekend, earned an at-large bid to the tournament and will face Wisconsin-Whitewater (24-3) on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, May 5.
On the women's side, Carthage earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament last Saturday, defeating Carthage 5-4 in the championship match of the CCIW's first-ever Automatic Qualifier Tournament. The Lady Reds (19-5) will also travel to Gustavus Adolphus where they will face the winner of the first round match between Grinnell and Wisconsin-La Crosse.
In addition, Amanda Sta. Romana of Carthage qualified as an individual in singles, along with Wheaton's Jordan Hook. Hook was also a qualifier in doubles play along with teammate Karly Olson, while the doubles tandem of Sta. Romana and Elizca Buys qualified as well.
This was the first season that the conference was given an automatic
bid to the NCAA Tournament as the NCAA approved automatic qualifiers
for tennis in January 2005, affective with the 2006-07 season.
