2008 CCIW Men’s Tennis Championship Goes to Carthage

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Carthage Red Men won its fifth straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) men’s tennis title Saturday in a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Wheaton in the championship match at Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington.

It was the sixth men’s tennis title in school history for the Red Men. Earlier in the day, Augustana beat Illinois Wesleyan 9-0 in the third place match while Elmhurst topped North Central 8-1 to take fifth place.

Carthage and Wheaton split the singles matches as the Red Men were winners at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles while the Thunder won at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles. Miguel Yunes (Villahermosa, Tasco, Mexico) of Carthage won at No. 1 singles 6-2, 7-5 over Wheaton's Josh Williams (Naperville, Ill.) while Carthage's Jack Schiro (Shorewood, Wis.) was the winner at No. 2 singles 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 over Wheaton's Justin Miller (Scottsdale, Ariz.). Carthage's Sergio Lopez (Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico) won at No. 3 singles while Wheaton's Ian Kirchner (Guilford, Conn.), David Warren (Oneont, N.Y.) and Jordan Williams (Naperville, Ill.) were victorious at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles respectively.

The difference was in the doubles matches as Carthage won both Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. Yunes and Lopez were the winner at No. 1 doubles. Schiro and J.T. Delk (Wheaton, Ill./North) were winners at No. 2 doubles for Carthage while Warren and Jordan Williams won at No. 3 doubles for Wheaton 8-1 over Carthage's Joey Perkins (Freeport, Ill.) and Andy Schwenke (Mukwonago, Wis.).
