2007 CCIW Men’s Tennis Championship Goes to Carthage
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Carthage Red Men won its fourth straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) men’s tennis title Saturday at Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington.
Carthage earned the title with a 7-2 victory over Wheaton in the championship match. It was the fifth men’s tennis title in school history for the Red Men. Earlier in the day, Augustana beat Illinois Wesleyan 7-2 in the third place match.
Carthage stormed out to an early lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. Miguel Yunes and Sergio Lopez of Carthage won at No. 1 doubles (8-2) over Wheaton’s Josh Williams and Cory Kraftson, while Carthage’s Phil Hamood and David Sands won at No. 2 doubles (8-2) over Wheaton’s Mike Simmerman and Ian Kirchner. At No. 3 doubles, Carthage’s Jack Schiro and JT Delk won (8-5) over Wheaton’s David Warren and Andrew Ziccardi.
In the singles matches, Williams defeated Yunes and No. 1, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Schiro was the winner at No. 2, beating Kirchner, 7-5, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Lopez won over Warren, 6-3, 6-4, while Kraftson was victorious at No. 4 singles, winning 6-4, 7-6 (7) against Sands.
Hamood topped Ziccardi at No. 5 singles, winning 7-6 (5), 6-4, while at No. 6 singles, Delk defeated Johnson, 6-2, 6-0.
