Carthage Captures Third Straight Men’s Tennis Title

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Carthage Red Men found themselves in familiar territory Saturday afternoon at Bloomington’s Evergreen Racquet Club. A 5-2 victory over Wheaton in the championship match of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Men’s Tennis Championships earned the Red Men their third straight title and fourth in school history.

Carthage earned victories in four of the six singles matches against Wheaton, along with two of three in the doubles matches. The Red Men’s Brad Livingston took care of business at No. 1 singles, topping Matt Siami 6-2. 6-3. Carthage’s Tommy Collins beat Christian Dawes at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 1-6, 10-2, while at No. 4 singles, Tres Heimann beat Wheaton’s Cory Kraftson 6-2, 6-3. Carthage’s Sergio Lopez beat Wheaton’s David Warren at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2.

Wheaton’s Josh Williams and Ian Kirchner won at No. 3 and No.6 respectively, topping Carthage’s Dave Sands 7-5, 6-4 and Phil Hamood 6-2, 7-5.

In the doubles competition, Livingston and Collins topped Williams and Warren 8-3 at No. 1, while Heimann and Tres beat Kraftson and Kirchner 8-6 at No. 3. Wheaton’s Siami and Dawes won at No. 2 doubles, beating Sands and Hamwood 9-7.

In other matches, Augustana beat Elmhurst 4-3 to take third place, while Illinois Wesleyan was a winner in the fifth-place match on Friday, beating North Central 5-2.

Note: CCIW men’s tennis all-conference teams, coach of the year, tournament MVP and player of the year will be released on Wednesday, May 3.
