CARTHAGE WINS SECOND STRAIGHT CCIW TITLE WITH 6-1 VICTORY OVER WHEATON IN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
BLOOMINGTON, Illinois – For the second year in a row Carthage is the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin champion in men’s tennis. The Redmen defeated Wheaton 6-1 in the championship match after beating Augustana 7-0 in the semi-finals. Brady Lindsley’s team had a bye in the first round by virtue of going undefeated during the regular season.
This is the second year that the championship has been decided in a dual meet format after years of having the CCIW tournament contested in championship style format with flight champions. Carthage has yet to lose a dual match in the conference tournament under this format.
Dane Schmidgall of Carthage, who won both of his matches at number one singles, was named the “Player of the Year” in the CCIW for the second consecutive season. Schmidgall, teammate Brad Livingston and Joe Williams of Wheaton shared the CCIW tournament MVP. The “Coach of the Year” honor was shared by Dave Webster of Wheaton, Brady Lindsley of Carthage and Henry Stanford of Elmhurst.
In the first round Augustana (#4) beat Illinois Wesleyan (#5) 7-0 and Elmhurst (#3) handled North Central (#6) 7-0. Carthage (#1) and Wheaton (#2) each received first round byes. The first semifinal had Carthage beating the Augustana 7-0 and Wheaton beating Elmhurst 6-1. While Carthage was taking care of Wheaton 6-1 for the championship, Augustana narrowly beat Elmhurst 4-3 for third place and Illinois Wesleyan beat North Central 7-0 for fifth place.
