NEW FORMAT AGREES WITH CARTHAGE AS REDMEN WIN FIRST OUTRIGHT TITLE

WHEATON, Illinois - A new format for deciding the men's tennis champion in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin certainly agreed with Brady Lindsley and Carthage College. The Redmen defeated Illinois Wesleyan 7-0 in the championship match of the CCIW tournament, held on April 23-24 at Wheaton College.

After years of having the CCIW tournament contested in championship style format with flight champions, the league went to a dual meet structure. Carthage, which shared the title in 2001 with Wheaton, won its first ever outright crown with a 7-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan in the championship match.

In fact, the Redmen did not lose a single match in their march to the top, beating Wheaton 7-0 in the semi-finals before whitewashing the Titans in the final.

Dane Schmidgall of Carthage, who won both of his matches at number one singles, was named the "Player of the Year" in the CCIW while his teammate Alex Donkor was selected as the tournament's "Most Valuable Player". Donkor won two matches at number three singles in the tournament. Both Schmidgall and Donkor won two matches in doubles as well, Schmidgall at number one and Donkor at number three. Lindsley was tabbed as the "Coach of the Year".

In the first round Wheaton (#4) beat Augustana (#5) 6-1 and Elmhurst (#3) handled North Central (#6) 7-0. Carthage (#1) and Illinois Wesleyan (#2) each received first round byes. The first semifinal had Carthage beating the Thunder 7-0 and Wesleyan beating Elmhurst 6-1. While Carthage easily dispatched of the Titans in the championship match, Wheaton narrowly got by Elmhurst for third by a score of 4-3. Augustana defeated North Central 7-0 for fifth place.
