2003 CCIW MEN'S TENNIS
Wheaton nails down fourth straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's tennis title by winning four singles and two doubles titles
The Wheaton Thunder men’s tennis team stretched its streak of consecutive College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin titles to four with an impressive showing on April 25-26 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Wheaton, under the direction of Eric Gorman, swept through the regular season with a 7-0 record in league dual meets for eight points in the standings. In the CCIW tournament the Thunder won with 71 points, 10 better than second place Carthage. That gave Wheaton eight more points for a total of 16. Carthage was second with 14 points while Augustana and Illinois Wesleyan tied for third with 11. Elmhurst (8), North Central (5), North Park (5) and Millikin (1) rounded out the field.Wheaton won individual singles championships at two - (Oliver Oatman), four – (Breck Schlueter), five - (Joe Williams) and six (Mark Vaughan). In doubles play Brian Wu and Aaron Schaecterle won at number two and Oatman and Schlueter took first place at number three.Dan Schmidgall of Carthage won the title at number one singles, defeating Schaecterle 4-6; 6-0; 6-3 in the championship match. Mike Hicks of Carthage won the title at number three singles. The Carthage number one doubles team of Schmidgall and Steve Stitzel also claimed a championship.
