Cernetisch, Hyland Named CCIW Softball Players of the Week

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Lorena Cernetisch of Augustana and Lauren Hyland of Illinois Wesleyan were named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) softball players of the week Tuesday after their performances during the previous week of competition.

Cernetisch, a senior shortstop from Erie, Ill., and Erie High School, batted .600 in eight games last week as the Vikings went 7-1. She had 15 hits in 25 at-bats while scoring 13 runs with three doubles, two home runs and seven RBI (from the leadoff spot). Her slugging percentage was .960 with 24 total bases in 25 at-bats and she stole 11 bases with three base-on-balls. In addition, she fielded 16 chances in the field without an error, her on base percentage was .655 and she also had a sacrifice bunt. She hit safely in all eight games and had two hits in all but the second game of the Clarke doubleheader. That, however, proved to be a big one as her double off the left field fence in the bottom of the eighth drove in the winning run in a 6-5 victory.

Hyland, a senior pitcher from Evergreen Park, Ill., and Evergreen Park High School, was 3-0 last week, all in CCIW games. She pitched a three hit shutout in a 7-0 win at North Park on April 22, a two hit shutout in 5-0 win at Carthage on April 21, and allowed five hits and only one earned run in 3-2 win over North Central on April 19. She now has 350 career strikeouts and needs 14 to pass Jennie Siron (363 from 1993-96) to become the school’s all-time leader.
