Ward, Hegna Named CCIW Softball Players of the Week

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Illinois Wesleyan’s Allison Ward and Wheaton’s Kim Hegna were named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Softball Players of the Week Tuesday after their performances during the previous week of competition.

Ward, a sophomore shortstop from Bloomington, Ill., and Normal Community High School, was six-for-nine (.667) with two doubles and a .889 slugging percentage in four Illinois Wesleyan wins last week. In a doubleheader sweep of Millikin, Ward was four-for-five with a run and two RBI. She was two-for-four with two RBI and drew three walks in a pair of wins against Monmouth. She also handled 18-of-19 fielding chances for a .947 average.

Hegna, a senior pitcher from Black River Falls, Wis., and Black River Falls High School, helped lead Wheaton to a 4-0 record last week as she posted a 2-0 record, with a save. In 11 innings of work last week, Hegna did not allow an earned run, with seven strikeouts. She earned the win as the starter on Saturday in a 10-1 Thunder victory against Lake Forest College as she scattered seven hits in six innings of a complete game victory that saw her strike \out four. In the same doubleheader, Hegna earned a save in one inning of hitless work in a 2-1 win against the Foresters. She opened the week with a victory in four innings of work in a 5-2 win at Beloit as she held the Buccaneers to just two hits, with two strikeouts.
