Cernetisch, Hegna Named CCIW Softball Players of the Week

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Lorena Cernetisch of Augustana and Kim Hegna of Wheaton were named softball players of the week in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tuesday after their performances during the previous week of competition.

Cernetisch, a junior shortstop from Erie, Ill., was nearly unstoppable in four Augustana victories last week. She played and started all four games and batted .769 with 10 hits in 13 at-bats while scoring five runs with four doubles, one triple, one home run and 10 runs-batted-in. She walked once and had a sacrifice fly and posted a slugging percentage of 1.462 (19 total bases in 13 at-bats). She was 3-for-4 with four RBI, one run scored, one double and one triple in the first game against St. Ambrose and followed that with a 2-for-3 effort with two runs scored in the second game. In the first game against Elmhurst she went 2-for-2 with one run scored, six RBI, one double and a triple and backed that up with a 3-for-4 outing where she scored one run, smacked a pair of doubles and coaxed a walk.

Hegna, a sophomore from Black River Falls, Wis., posted a 2-1 record on the mound last week, leading the Thunder to a pair of conference victories. In 17-2/3 innings of work she allowed just one earned run for a 0.40 ERA for the week. On Tuesday Hegna led Wheaton to a 10-2 win against Carthage, allowing just one earned run, with three strikeouts. On Thursday Wheaton defeated North Central 5-0 as Hegna posted a seven inning shutout with four strikeouts.
