Carthage Earns First CCIW Men’s Golf Title since 1996
PONTIAC, Ill. – For the first time in 10 years, the Carthage Red Men can say that they are champions in men’s golf after capturing the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship at the Pontiac Elks Club Saturday afternoon.
The Red Men’s two-day score of 608 (299+309) was 10 strokes better than that of second place finishers Millikin (312 + 306) and five-time defending champion Illinois Wesleyan 305+313), who each finished at 618 respectively. The win was Carthage’s sixth in school history and first since 1996 when the Red Men won five titles in six seasons.
Rounding out the team scores were Augustana (307+315=622), Elmhurst (311+320=631), Wheaton (315+333=648), North Central (337+336=673) and North Park (342+342=684).
Tyler Wollberg of Carthage won the individual title (71+75=146), while Kyle Mann of Elmhurst was second (74+75=149). Josh Mulligan of Millikin (76+75=151) was third, while Carthage’s Steve Gillie (72+80=152) and Illinois Wesleyan’s Mark Niemann (74+78=152) were fourth respectively.
The rest of the top 10 included Augustana’s Joey Childers (77+77=154), Derric Eisold (77+77=154) and Andrew Benton (73+81=154), along with Carthage’s Mike Roehl (79+75=154) in sixth, while North Park’s Peter Johnson (73+82=155), Illinois Wesleyan’s Michael Hasselbring (79+76=155) and Millikin’s Thomas Conway (77+78=155) finished in a tie for 10th.
