TITANS COME FROM FOURTH PLACE TO WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT LEAGUE TITLE; AUGUSTANA FRESHMAN TRENT MARTIN GRABS INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP

PONTIAC, Illinois - The Illinois Wesleyan Titans made a huge second day charge to capture a fourth consecutive College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's golf championship while Augustana freshman Trent Martin used a big first day and then held on to win the individual title. After the first day the Titans were in fourth place with a score of 306, trailing North Park (299), Augustana (300) and Millikin (303). On Saturday, May 1 the weather conditions took a turn for the worse but Illinois Wesleyan's score of 312 was more than enough to vault over the three teams in front. Billy Smith shot a 75 and Chad Golembeck had a 76 to lead the Titans. Wesleyan's two day total of 618 was five strokes better than Augustana's second place total of 623. Martin won the individual title with a two day score of 148 with a first day total of 69 putting him in first place to stay. He shot a 79 on the second day and managed to hold off Matt Lindahl of North Park by a single stroke. For Illinois Wesleyan and head coach Jim Ott, it was the fourth straight team title and the ninth in school history.
