2003 CCIW GOLF Second day comeback gives Illinois Wesleyan third consecutive CCIW title

Things did not look good for Illinois Wesleyan after the first day of competition in the 2003 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men’s golf championships, which were held at the Pontiac Elks Club in Pontiac, Illinois on April 25-26. After one day the Titans were in a tie for fifth place with a score of 319 and hopes for a third straight league title were dim for head coach Jim Ott’s squad.Through 18 holes Millikin, with Blake Swango leading the way with a 69, held a commanding lead with a score of 319. The Titans shot a terrific 297 on the second day and wound up with a two day total of 616 to top Millikin (620) by four strokes.Chad Golembeck led the way with Illinois Wesleyan with a second day score of 73. Coupled with the 78 he shot in the first round, Golembeck wound up with a two day total of 151, good enough for fourth place individually. Eric Danielson also shot a 73 for the Titans on Saturday and Bryan Noonan came up with a 74. Add Billy Smith’s 77 and Eric Hellman’s 77 and Illinois Wesleyan had the right stuff to notch the eighth CCIW title in the school’s history.Millikin, which had an 18 stroke lead on the Titans heading into the second day, shot 319 on Saturday and held on for second place over North Park (312+313=625).Swango won the individual title with a two day score of 150 (69+81). He actually tied for the individual championship with Matt Lindahl of North Park (76+74=150) and Justin Schwartz of Millikin (74+76=150) but won a playoff.
