Carthage Wins CCIW Baseball Tournament Title, Awaits Regional Announcement

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Carthage Red Men earned a 5-3, 10 inning victory over Augustana Saturday at Jack Horenberger Field in Bloomington, Ill., to take home the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament title and earn the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Regional.

The win was the second CCIW Baseball Tournament title in a row for Carthage and ninth all-time. The Red Men advance to the Central Regional of the NCAA Baseball Championship, with the field set to be announced on Monday, May 14.

Trailing 3-2 heading into the top of the eighth, Carthage’s David Hermes hit a solo home run over the left field wall, tying the score at 3-3. The Red Men pulled ahead for good in the top of the tenth when a Jose Alba single to center field drove in a run. A Steve Rucks single to left drove in an insurance run for Carthage.

The Red Men finish the regular season with a 32-11 record, while Augustana ends with a record of 32-12.
