FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE sent 05/10/04
ROCK ISLAND, Illinois - Matt Mele of Wheaton and Brad Groth of Elmhurst shared the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin "Batter of the Week" and Rob Daggett of Elmhurst was selected as the "Pitcher of the Week" for the week ending May 10.
Mele closed his career in storybook fashion, collecting base hits in his final seven at-bats. He was eight for 14 last week for a .643 batting average with a pair of stolen bases. In the final three games of his career he went eight for 11 in the series with Millikin.
Groth tied the CCIW single season record for hits with his 43rd of the year in conference play. He also became Elmhurst's all-time hits leader, breaking the old mark of 205. For the week he hit .548 (17-31) while scoring 13 runs and driving in nine. In a 13-4 win against Augustana Groth was four for five with three runs scored and five RBI. He has a hitting streak of 21 games intact heading into the conference tournament.
