ILLINOIS WESLEYAN WINS 19 TH CONFERENCE TITLE

KENOSHA, Wisconsin - The Illinois Wesleyan Titans used a 5-4 victory over Carthage in the first championship game of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament on Sunday, May 16 in Kenosha, Wisconsin to clinch the 2004 league title. It was the 19 th CCIW baseball crown in school history for the Titans and the third under the direction of veteran head coach Dennis Martel.

Illinois Wesleyan was 16-5 during the regular season and had a two point lead on Carthage heading into the CCIW tournament. Each school is given one point for each conference victory during the regular season. Those points are then combined with points given during the league tournament. Even though Carthage won the conference tournament with a convincing 11-1 victory over Illinois Wesleyan in the second championship game of the double elimination event, the Titans secured the league title in the first championship game. Carthage, which was 14-7 during the regular season, accumulated four points in the tournament to finish with 18 while Illinois Wesleyan picked up three points in the tournament to end up with 19 and grab both the CCIW title and the automatic berth to the NCAA Division III national tournament. Carthage was given an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament.

Martel was tabbed as the CCIW "Coach of the Year" and Rob Daggett and Brad Groth, both of Elmhurst, shared the CCIW's "Most Outstanding Player" award. It was the second consecutive year that Daggett was picked as the league "Most Outstanding Player". Groth, who led the league in seven offensive categories (average, runs, hits, on-base percentage, RBI, total bases and at-bats), broke a pair of conference records. He scored 32 runs to erase the previous record of 31 held by Augustana's Mike Kane in 2002 and his 43 hits tied Kevin Sullivan of Carthage's mark set in 2000.
