CCIW to Honor Illinois Wesleyan Football Player With Moment of Silence
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan football player Doug Schmied will be honored by the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin with a moment of silence before every CCIW football game Oct. 1.
Schmied died of heat-related complications at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria on Aug. 24, five days after becoming ill during a morning practice.
The conference portion of the football season begins Oct. 1 with North Park at Augustana, Carthage at Millikin, Illinois Wesleyan at Elmhurst and Wheaton at North Central.
“Doug’s loss is a tragedy that extends far beyond the Illinois Wesleyan community,” CCIW Commissioner Chris Martin said. “The entire conference shares in the grief of this tragic event. Having all eight conference schools observe a moment of silence shows the tremendous respect across the conference and is evidence of the fact that the CCIW is a family with eight members who share in each other’s triumphs and tragedy.”
Schmied, a 21-year old native of Hanna City, Ill., was an accounting and computer science major and was named a co-captain this season as a member of the Titan offensive line.
Memorials may be directed to Illinois Wesleyan University/Doug Schmied Athletic Fund, PO Box 2900, Bloomington IL 61702-2900.
