Question: Can a student-athlete avoid losing a season of participation by having his/her name not placed on the team roster but still practice with the team?
Answer: No, if a student-athlete practices after the first opportunity to compete, he is charged with a season of participation regardless of whether he/she is on the roster or not.
Question: We have a transfer student-athlete who we know cannot participate in competition this year because he transferred from another CCIW school. Can he practice?
Answer: Yes, he can practice noting that the CCIW transfer rule applies to competition. Please note that by practicing after the first date of competition, he will utilize a season of participation per Bylaw 14.2.4.1.
Question: Can we use male student-athletes to practice against our female basketball team? Can we also provide expenses for our male practice players (if permissible) to travel with the team on the road?
Answer: It is permissible for a school to use male student-athletes to practice against female student-athletes provided the male athletes are eligible for practice per Bylaw 14.1.8.1 and have semesters or quarters remaining under the 10-semester/15-quarter clock rule (Bylaw 14.2.2). It is permissible to provide actual and necessary travel expenses (e.g., transportation, lodging, meals) to a student-athlete for participation in athletics competition, provided the student-athlete is representing the institution (competes in the uniform of the institution) and is eligible for collegiate competition in the applicable sport. Therefore, it is not permissible to provide a male student (who is practicing with a women's team) travel expenses to an away-from-home competition, inasmuch as such students will not be representing the women's team in the competition.
Question: Our spring nontraditional season runs from late April through mid May. One of our soccer student-athletes would like to play on an outside club team during this time. Is this permissible?
Answer: No, this is not permissible. Per NCAA outside competition regulations, it is not permissible for a student-athlete to participate on an outside team during the institution’s declared playing season, which includes the nontraditional segment. Either the nontraditional segment dates need to be changed or the student-athlete cannot play without jeopardizing his elgibility.
Querstion: Can a student-athlete, who was injured during the first half of the season but attempted to return to competition in the second half of the season, still receive a hardship waiver? What if the student-athlete only returns for practice during the second half of the season but does not compete. Can they receive a hardship waiver?
Answer: A student-athlete who suffers an injury in the first half of the season, attempts to return to competition during the second half of the season and then is unable to participate further due to the injury cannot receive a hardship waiver inasmuch as the student-athlete participated in the second half of the season. If the student-athlete only returns to practice, not competition, during the second half of the season, he or she may still qualify for a hardship waiver.
