Bylaw 12
Question: Can a student-athlete accept a $25 gift certificate to a local shopping mall earned for competition in a sporting event held during the summer months?
Answer: Per NCAA Bylaw 12.1.1.4.1, this is permissible as long as the gift certificate is not redeemable for cash. The problem is, will a mall gift certificate satisfy this component? If the student-athlete goes into the mall drug store and buys a $.50 item, he will probably get $24.50 in cash back which would be a violation. The gift certificate must be merchandise only, meaning in the example above, in order not have a violation, the student-athlete must receive $24.50 in store credit good for future merchandise.
