CCIW Statement Regarding the Death of IWU Football Player Doug Schmied

On behalf of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, the CCIW expresses our sincere condolences to the family of Illinois Wesleyan football player Doug Schmied, as well as to the entire Titan football family. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone during this difficult time.

As we share in the grief of this tragic incident, the CCIW reminds its institutions, in accordance with NCAA guidelines, that practice and/or competition in hot and/or humid environmental conditions poses special problems for student-athletes. Heat stress and resulting heat illness is a primary concern in these conditions. Constant surveillance and education are necessary to prevent heat-related problems.

We fully support Illinois Wesleyan’s investigation into this incident and would be willing to assist the university if so requested.
