HANOVER PARK, Ill. – Wheaton, under the direction of head coach Jane Nelson, won its 21st College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) women’s tennis title and first since 2014 on Saturday at Centre Court Athletic Club.
The Thunder pulled ahead on the final day with wins in four of the six singles finals and one of the three doubles finals, picking up 68 championship points over the three-day event. Two-time defending champion Augustana earned the second-most championship points with 66, followed by Carthage (31), Carroll (20) and Millikin (20), Elmhurst (8), Illinois Wesleyan (6), North Central (4) and North Park (2).
Beginning this season, the CCIW champion was determined using a combination of points earned in the regular season dual meet standings and the CCIW championship standings, with the championship standings points counting twice. Those two numbers were combined to form the final 2017 CCIW Women’s Tennis standings: Wheaton (26), Augustana (25), Carthage (21), Carroll (17), Millikin (16), Elmhurst (11.5), Illinois Wesleyan (9.5), North Central (5.5) and North Park (3.5).
Augustana junior
Caitlyn Schaffer took home CCIW Player of the Year honors after winning the No. 1 singles title over Wheaton’s Katie Park (3-6, 6-3, 6-1). She became the third Vikings player to win player of the year honors after Kim Sawyer in 2012 and 2013 and Lauren Goggin in 2016.
Augustana’s
Annie Timm won the No. 2 singles title over Carthage’s
Angelica Emmanouil (6-2, 6-1).
The Thunder pulled ahead on Saturday with wins over Augustana at Nos. 3-6 singles.
Miranda Kay beat
Zeana Badawi at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-2),
Emma Westwick topped
Maleeha Chowdhury at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-0),
Claire Browning beat
Morgan Bullen at No. 5 singles (6-1, 6-2), and
Emme Lindquist defeated
Margaret Chadick at No. 6 singles (4-6, 6-3, 6-0).
Schaffer and
Madeline Lombardi won the No. 1 doubles title over Browning and Park (8-4), while Bullen and
Faith Johnson claimed the No. 3 doubles title over Westwick and
Nicole Freeman (9-7). However, Wheaton clinched the conference title with a win at No. 2 doubles as Kay and
Sara Magnuson beat Badawi and Timm (8-4).
By finishing in the top four, Wheaton, Augustana, Carthage and Carroll advance to the 2018 CCIW Automatic Qualifier Tournament, which will be held April 27-28, 2018 at Wheaton College. Matches will take place in a team format with two semifinals on April 27, followed by the championship on April 28, with the winner earning the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship.
