Carthage wins sixth CCIW men's swimming title, fifth in a row

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage men’s swimming team won its fifth-straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) title on Saturday and sixth in the program’s history. 

The Red Men won with a team score of 920.5, followed by Wheaton (886.5), Illinois Wesleyan (471.5), Rose-Hulman (403), Augsutana (372.5), Millikin (154) and North Central (151).

Carthage’s Kyle Drake (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) was named Most Valuable Swimmer while Rose-Hulman’s Matt Ross (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) earned outstanding performer recognition. Augustana’s Scott Johannsen and Carthage’s Greg Earhart were named the Co-Men’s Coaches of the Year.

Carthage’s Teryn Solan (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) began the night with the individual title in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:09.84. Wheaton’s Korey Clement (Jenison, Mich./H.S.) placed second (16:32.28) while Carthage’s Connor McCurrie (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) was third (16:41.91).

Drake won the 200-yard backstroke (1:48.94), followed by Illinois Wesleyan’s Mikey Firth (East Moline, Ill./United) (1:50.73) and Carthage’s Jake Carabelli (South Beloit, Ill./Rockton-Hononegah) (1:53.68).

Carthage’s Ryan Ortmann (Woodstock, Ill./H.S.) captured the title in the 100-yard freestyle (46.16). Wheaton’s Wills Francis (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) (46.67) and Dan Nahigian (La Canada, Calif./Maranatha) (46.68) finished second and third respectively.

Carthage took the top two spots in the 200-yard breaststroke as Adam Van Huis (Winneconne, Wis./H.S.) (2:08.29) and Scott Pinter (Bloomington, Ill./Normal) (2:08.56) finished first and second respectively. Rose-Hulman’s Logan Ryan (Kent, Wash./Harrison) finished third (2:09.95).

Ross won the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.52), followed by Illinois Wesleyan’s Marcus Duval (Bloomington, Minn./International School of Minnesota) (154.30) and Wheaton’s Carl Sveen (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) (1:54.35).

Wheaton’s Francis, Tim Walker (Dassel, Minn./Dassel Cokato), Nahigian and Hayes Wilkerson (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day School) closed out the night with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:06.17).
