2012 CCIW Swimming Championships
All-CCIW Performers (Day 2 of 3)
KENOSHA, Wis. – The Wheaton men’s and women’s swimming teams lead after the second day of the 2012 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimming Championships, hosted by Carthage College.
The Thunder currently hold the lead in the women’s standings with a team score of 614, followed by Illinois Wesleyan (554), Carthage (537), North Central (247), Augustana (223), Millikin (137) and Rose-Hulman (98).
Wheaton also leads in the men’s standings with a score of 649.5, followed by Carthage (633.5), Illinois Wesleyan (348.5), Augustana (282.5), Rose-Hulman (271), Millikin and North Central (89).
Carthage’s Jensena Paul (Portage, Wis./H.S.), Allison Soper (Downers Grove, Ill./North), Kelly Loftus (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) and Megan Shover (Prospect Heights, Ill./St. Viator), along with Illinois Wesleyan's Andrea Peterson (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor), Lizzie Egan (Oak Lawn, Ill./H.S.), Katie McHugh (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and Angela Lugg (Woodbury, Minn./H.S.) tied for first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.63) to kick off the evening's events.
Wheaton’s Jamie Walitsch (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian) won the 400-yard individual medley (4:34.54), followed by Carthage’s Ashley Gladis (Batavia, Ill./H.S.) (4:37.30) and Wheaton’s Chelsey Long (Dover, N.H./H.S.) (4:39.54).
Illinois Wesleyan’s McHugh broke her own meet and CCIW open record by winning the 100-yard butterfly (56.95). Wheaton’s Moire Yue (Edina, Minn./H.S.) finished second (57.82) while Illinois Wesleyan’s Grace Nafziger (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy) was third (58.28).
Lugg won Illinois Wesleyan’s second individual title of the night in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in with a time of 1:52.78. Wheaton’s Lauren Jurgens (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa) placed second (1:54.83), followed by teammate Carlie Herich (Hebron, Ky.) (1:55.72).
North Central’s Katie Stratton (Naperville, Ill./North) beat her own meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.07) to win the event. Carthage’s Soper was second (1:06.57) and Illinois Wesleyan’s Egan was third (1:07.80).
Illinois Wesleyan’s Peterson set a new meet record by winning the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.66. Carthage’s Paul was second (58.62), followed by North Central’s Kelsey Truedson (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) in third (59.25).
The Illinois Wesleyan 800-yard freestyle relay team of McHugh, Peterson, Egan and Lugg set a new meet record time of 7:44.04 to win the event. The Titans broke a 10-year old conference record set by North Central in 2002 (7:46.29).
The men’s events began with Wheaton winning the 200-yard medley relay as Wills Francis (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox), Mike Placeway (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview), Hal Hackett (Bremen, Ind./H.S.) and Dan Nahigian (La Canada, Calif./Maranatha) set a meet record time of 1:32.98.
Carthage’s Kyle Drake (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) and Illinois Wesleyan’s Marcus Duval (Bloomington, Minn./International School of Minnesota) tied atop the 400-yard individual medley with a meet and CCIW open record time of 4:00.66. Drake and Duval beat the old record of 4:01.26 set by Millikin’s Rodney Clark at the 1986 conference event. Wheaton’s Carl Sveen (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) finished third (4:08.63).
Rose-Hulman’s John Huster (Terre Haute, Ind./North Vigo) captured the 100-yard butterfly title with a time of 50.22. Augustana’s Aaron Holt (Mount Vernon, Ill./Township) placed second (51.27) and Carthage’s Doug Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) was third (51.38).
Wheaton’s Hayes Wilkerson (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day School) won the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.14), followed by Augustana’s Daniel Hinck (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) (1:44.33) and Carthage’s Jake Carabelli (South Beloit, Ill./Rockton-Honoegah) (1:44.33).
Carthage’s Scott Pinter (Bloomington, Ill./Normal) was champion in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.86) while Millikin’s Shane McDade (Wheeling, Ill./H.S.) was second (58.18) and Illinois Wesleyan’s Tommy Gilbert (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) was third (58.82).
Wheaton’s Francis won the 100-yard backstroke (51.14), followed by Illinois Wesleyan’s Mikey Firth (East Moline, Ill./United) (51.27) and Augustana’s Holt (52.65).
Wheaton won the 800-yard freestyle relay as Wilkerson, Korey Clement (Jenison, Mich./H.S.), Dave Brown (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) and Sveen finished with a time of 6:58.12.
The championships conclude on Saturday with the prelims at 10:30 a.m. followed by the finals at 6 p.m.
