Simmons, Gashi Earn CCIW Volleyball Player of the Week Honors

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Jori Simmons of Carthage and Albana Gashi of Millikin were named volleyball players of the week in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Wednesday after their performances during the previous week of competition.

Simmons, a senior middle blocker from Frankfort, Ill., and Lincoln-Way East High School, was named to the all-tournament team as the Lady Reds went 4-0 to sweep the Aug. 31-Sept. 1 Elmhurst College Tournament I. Simmons, who will be featured in a Sept. 19 edition of “NCAA On Campus” on ESPN Classic, collected 36 kills, hit .500 and added nine blocks in four matches.

Gashi, a junior outside hitter/defensive specialist from Flanagan, Ill., and Flanagan High School, was named to the Illinois College All-Tournament team after helping Millikin to a 3-1 record to open the season. She led Millikin with 86 digs (6.14 per game) and had one kill and a team-high 10 aces. She registered 16 digs against Illinois College, 26 digs and two aces versus Cornell, one kill, 21 digs and eight aces against Bethany Lutheran, and 23 digs versus Washington University.
