2004 PRESEASON VOLLEYBALL POLL

ROCK ISLAND , Illinois - Just four years ago, in the fall of 2000, Carthage did not win a single match in either the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin regular season or the league's post-season tournament. Today the Lady Reds are sitting in the favorite's seat of the CCIW after edging four time defending champion Elmhurst in the annual preseason voting of conference coaches.

Head coach Leanne Ulmer's team picked up five first place votes and 46 points to finish just ahead of Elmhurst 's 44 points with two first place votes. Carthage was 26-11 overall last year and 3-4 in the regular season portion of the CCIW schedule. The Lady Reds won the conference tournament with a 3-1 (28-30; 31-29; 30-17; 30-27) win over Elmhurst in the championship match. Elmhurst won the conference title with nine total points while Illinois Wesleyan, the regular season champion with a 6-2 mark, was second with eight points. Carthage was third last year with seven points. Elmhurst , which owns eight league titles, was 29-10 overall last year and 6-2 in the CCIW.

Illinois Wesleyan is third in the preseason poll with 34 points and one first place vote. Kim Nelson-Brown was selected as the CCIW's "Coach of the Year" in 2003. Millikin, 23-17 overall and 3-4 in the league, comes in fourth with 33 points while Augustana, 16-22 and 4-3, is fifth with 24 points. Wheaton has 19 points in sixth after going 21-16 and 3-4. North Central checks in with 17 points for seventh while North Park is eighth with seven points. North Central was 15-22 and 3-4 and North Park had a 10-30 and 1-6 record.

Voting is done by the volleyball coaches in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.Each coach votes for the seven other schools in the league in order of predicted finish.Points are assigned in reverse order of voting (seven points for first, six for second, etc.).Coaches may not vote for her own team.

NOTE: The CCIW determines its championship on the basis of one point for each regular season win and one point for each CCIW tournament victory. In the case of a tie for the CCIW title, the tam that places higher in the tournament is placed higher in the final standings.
