2002 PRESEASON VOLLEYBALL POLL
ROCK ISLAND , Illinois - The Elmhurst Bluejays have captured the last two College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin volleyball championships and according to a preseason vote of the conference coaches, Julie Hall's club is the favorite to make it three in a row in 2002. Last year Elmhurst and Augustana actually tied for first place in the point standings with 11 points each but the Bluejays were awarded the NCAA Division III automatic berth by virtue of finishing higher than the Vikings in the league tournament. Elmhurst was 33-7 overall in 2001 and 6-1 in the CCIW as it won the sixth conference volleyball title in school history.
The Bluejays were picked for first place on all seven ballots by opposing coaches for a perfect score of 49 points. Illinois Wesleyan, which finished finished fourth in 2001 after going 19-20 overall and 3-4 in league play, has been picked for second place with 39 points. The Titans also nailed down one first place vote.
Augustana, which made the NCAA Division III tournament last year as an at-large team after going 29-5 overall and 7-0 in the league, was picked for third place with 34 points. Carthage , a third place finisher in 2001 after years in the bottom half of the standings, nailed down fourth place with 31 points. The Lady Reds were 21-15 overall and 5-2 in the CCIW last year. Millikin (16-19 & 3-4) has been tabbed for fifth with 23 points with North Central (15-23 & 1-6) right behind in sixth with 20 points. Wheaton was 19-18 and 1-6 a year ago and is picked for seventh with 19 points while North Park (11-25 & 2-5) occupies eighth place with nine points.
Each coach votes for the seven other schools in the league but is not allowed to vote for her own team.
