2004 WOMEN’S TENNIS

CARTHAGE WINS THIRD STRAIGHT LEAGUE TITLE BY NINE POINTS OVER WHEATON; ELIZABETH MACIELLAN OF WHEATON WINS AT NUMBER ONE SINGLES, STOPPING KELLY MIKKILA’S BID FOR FOUR STRAIGHT NUMBER ONE CHAMPIONSHIPS

BLOOMINGTON, Illinois – The big story coming out of the 2004 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women’s tennis championship at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Illinois was not necessarily who did win but rather who did not. Wheaton’s Elizabeth MacIellan took home the number one singles title with a convincing 6-1; 6-2 victory over Kelly Mikkila of Carthage. With the win, MacIellan stopped Mikkila’s bid to become the first ever player to win four straight individual titles at number one singles. There has been only one player in conference history who has won four consecutive championships at the same position and that was Leanne Biehl of Wheaton who took first at number three singles from 1995 through 1998.

Despite MacIellan’s heroics, it was not enough to lift the Thunder to the team title as Carthage took home the championship trophy for the third consecutive year. The Lady Reds of head coach Brady Lindsley scored 68 points to nudge Wheaton, which was second with 59 points. Illinois Wesleyan was third with 47 and Augustana finished fourth with 31. North Central (nine), Millikin (six) and Elmhurst (five) took places fifth, sixth and seventh respectively while North Park did not field a team.

Carthage won three singles and two doubles championships while Wheaton won a pair of singles and one doubles title. Elizca Buys of Carthage beat Debbie Bartell of Illinois Wesleyan at number two in a hard fought 3-6; 6-4; 7-6 championship match. Amanda Sta. Romana of Carthage beat Diane Arnold of Illinois Wesleyan 6-0; 6-2 at number three and Alex Jackson of Carthage won her third straight title at number four, beating Stacy Colvard of Wheaton 6-1; 6-4. Sarah Rusch of Illinois Wesleyan beat Wheaton’s Elise Linden 6-3; 7-5 to win at number five and Karly Olson of Wheaton defeated Stephanie Coulis of Carthage 6-2; 6-1 at number six.

In doubles action Mikkila and Buys beat MacIellan and Olson 6-1; 7-5 to win at number one. It was the third straight year that Mikkila has been on the winning team at number one doubles. Sta. Romana and Jackson combined at number two doubles to beat Meredith Masoncup and Brooke Parrish of Wheaton 6-4; 6-0 in the championship. Leah Moberg and Sarah Myre of Wheaton took the number three doubles crown with a 7-5; 7-5 win over Erika Lambros and Brooke Braastad of Carthage.

MacIellan was named the CCIW’s "Player of the Year" and Sta. Romana was selected as the tournament’s most valuable player. Lindsley was the "Coach of the Year".
