Wheaton Earns 11th Women’s Tennis Title
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Behind six individual titles, the Wheaton Thunder won its 11th College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Women’s Tennis Championship Saturday at the Evergreen Racquet Club, tallying 72 points on the day and topping second place Carthage, who earned 60 points.
Thunder coach Jane Nelson and her program won their first championship since 2001, stopping a string of three straight titles by Carthage, thanks in part to individual titles in Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 5 singles, as well as Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.
Elizabeth Maclellan defended her title in No. 1 singles, topping Carthage’s Amanda Sta. Romana 6-1, 6-0. Wheaton’s Jordan Hook won at No. 2 singles, topping Carthage’s Elizca Buys 6-2, 6-1, and at No. 3 singles Karly Olson of Wheaton defeated Illinois Wesleyan’s Debbie Bartell 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Carthage won its first title at No. 4 singles as Kristin Minkoski defeated Brook Parrish of Wheaton 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, Shannon Hale of Wheaton beat Sarah Rusch of Illinois Wesleyan 6-2, 6-1, while Brooke Braastad of Carthage won her team’s second individual title at No. 6 singles, topping Brittney Dunn of Wheaton 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
The match of the day came at No. 1 doubles where Buys and Sta. Romana beat Maclellan and Hook in a super tie-breaker 5-7, 7-6, (7-4) 10-7. Karly Olson and Parrish of Wheaton were the champions at No. 2 doubles, beating Bartell and Kristin Sawyer from Illinois Wesleyan 6-0, 7-5. Leah Moberg and Hale won Wheaton’s last individual title at No. 3 doubles, beating Erin Powers and Braastad of Carthage 6-0, 6-4.
