wheaton wins CCIW Automatic Qualifier to NCAA Women’s Tennis championship
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – In the second College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Women’s Tennis Automatic Qualifier Tournament, Wheaton topped Carthage 8-1 in the championship match Saturday at Evergreen Racquet Club to earn the conference’s AQ bid to the NCAA Championship.
This was the second season that the CCIW was given an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship as the NCAA approved automatic qualifiers for tennis in January 2005, affective with the 2006-07 season.
Wheaton's Jordan Hook (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) won the match at No. 1 singles with a win over Carthage's Gina Klein (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Shannon Hale (Littleton, Colo./JK Mullen) won at No. 2 singles for Wheaton, defeating Carthage's Beth Kaufman (Barrington, Ill.) 6-1, 6-2. Brittney Dunn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City North), Sara Federschmidt (Orange Park, Fla./Fleming Island) and Kayli Edwards (Ada, Okla./H.S.) won the fourth, fifth and sixth singles respectively.
Carthage's lone win came at No. 3 singles when Taylor Gustafson (Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield) defeated Brooke Parrish (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) 6-3, 6-7, (10-8), 10-5.
Hook and Federschmidt teamed up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-1 win over Klein and Gustafson. Hale and Parrish won at No. 2 doubles while Dunn and Edwards was the winner at No. 3 doubles.
The NCAA women's tennis pairings will be selected on Monday, April 28, 2008 and posted at the NCAA’s website at ncaa.com.
