Wheaton Wins 13th CCIW Women’s Tennis Title in School History
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Wheaton Thunder earned its third straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) women’s tennis championship Saturday at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.
The win was Wheaton’s 13th women’s tennis conference title in school history as they won with a team score of 69. Carthage was second with 59 points, while Augustana was third (37), followed by North Central (27), Illinois Wesleyan (23), Millikin (five) and Elmhurst (five). By finishing in the top four, Wheaton, Carthage, Augustana and North Central advance to play in the CCIW Automatic Qualifier Tournament next April to determine who will earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Wheaton’s Jordan Hook defended her title at No. 1 singles, topping Carthage’s Gina Klein 6-2, 6-0. Allison Heim of Illinois Wesleyan defeated Kelly Hatch from North Central, 8-2, to win the third place match. At No. 2 singles, Carthage’s Beth Kaufman beat Wheaton’s Shannon Hale 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (3), while Sarah Rusch of Illinois Wesleyan took third in the flight. Carthage earned another individual title at No. 3 singles as Taylor Gustafson beat Brooke Parrish of Wheaton 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Allison Paschold of North Central won the third place match.
Brittney Dunn got Wheaton back on track at No. 4 singles, winning her championship match 6-1, 6-2 over Carthage’s Kathleen Hornick. Augustana’s Emily Doemland placed third at No. 4 singles, while at No. 5 singles, Wheaton’s Kayli Edwards won her championship match over Augustana’s Kaitlin Kulovitz 6-0, 6-0. Christine Heyd of North Central placed third at No. 5 singles. Wheaton’s Sara Federschmidt took home the championship at No. 6 singles, beating Augustana’s Audrey Yenchek 6-2, 6-1. Carthage’s Julie Rendino placed third.
Gustafson and Klein won at No. 1 doubles, beating Hook and Lindsey Hallet of Wheaton 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Jenna Richardson and Kulovitz from Augustana took third. At No. 2 doubles, Kaufman and Hornick from Carthage beat Wheaton’s Hale and Parrish 7-6 (5), 6-2. Jenna Richardson and Kulovitz from Augustana placed third.
Dunn and Edwards teamed up to win at No. 3 doubles, beating Alli Bernardi and Yenchek of Augustana 7-5, 6-0. Tara Madziarek and Christine Heyd of North Central placed third.
