CARTHAGE SWEEPS TO SECOND STRAIGHT LEAGUE TITLE; KELLY MIKKILA WINS THIRD STRAIGHT NUMBER ONE SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

BLOOMINGTON, Illinois - One year ago the Carthage Lady Reds nearly pulled off a clean sweep en route to winning the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin team title. This time around Brady Lindsley’s charges did accomplish that noteworthy feat, winning all six singles titles and all three doubles crowns en route to scoring a perfect 81 points. It was the second straight CCIW championship and third in school history for the Lady Reds.

Carthage scored 81 points to easily outpoint the field with Wheaton nipping Illinois Wesleyan by a single point 46-45 for second. Augustana was third with 35 while Elmhurst (8), North Central (7), Millikin (3) and North Park (0) rounded out the scoring.

Kelly Mikkila of Carthage won her third straight title at number one singles with a 2-6; 6-1; 6-3 victory over Elizabeth MacIellan of Wheaton in the finals. She also teamed with teammate Sara Cahoon to win at number one doubles for the second consecutive year.

Cahoon beat Kristen Pence of Augustana 6-2; 6-4 to win at number two singles for the second straight year. Cahoon also won at number three singles in 2001 and number five in 2000, making her a rare four year singles champion. Elizca Buys took the measure of Deb Bartell of Illinois Wesleyan 6-1; 6-0 at number three and Alex Jackson won for the second straight year at number four by beating Kathy Olson of Wheaton 6-1; 6-1 in the final. Kristine Meulendyke beat Lindy Wick of Illinois Wesleyan 6-3; 3-6; 6-0 for the championship of number five and Natalie Widaman beat Elise Linden of Wheaton 6-1; 6-2 in the sixth singles title match. Widaman also won at sixth singles last year.

Cahoon and Mikkila’s title was their second straight at number one doubles and third in a row together as they won at number two in 2001. They beat MacIellan and Olson of Wheaton 6-2; 6-3 in the final. Buys and Meulendyke beat Pence and Andrea Johnson of Augustana 6-1; 6-4 for the number two doubles title and Jackson and Widaman beat Erin Hoekstra and Leah Moberg of Wheaton 7-6 (7-3); 5-7; 10-5 to grab the number three crown.
