WHEATON WINS 10TH CONSECUTIVE CCIW TITLE WITH 5-1 WIN OVER ILLINOIS WESLEYAN IN CCIW CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
WHEATON, Illinois – Wheaton has dominated the sport of women’s soccer in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin since the league first began sponsoring it in 1995. That domination continued in 2004 as the Thunder of head coach Pete Felske won the CCIW title for the 10th straight time. Wheaton earned its "decade of excellence" with a convincing 5-1 victory over Illinois Wesleyan in the championship game of the conference tournament on Saturday, November 6 at East McCully Field.
Jennifer Binger scored two goals in the first 12 minutes of the game and Ashley Wiersma added another first half goal as the Thunder jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime and were never really threatened. Wheaton had a 24-6 advantage in shots and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Thunder, 20-1 overall, swept through the CCIW with a perfect 7-0 record; outscoring its opponents 36-2 in league games. Wheaton tallied 27 points in the conference’s point system and had actually clinched the NCAA Division III automatic berth before the championship game began. Carthage actually finished second in the league standings with 18 points while Illinois Wesleyan was third with 16 and Augustana fourth with 11.
Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, November 3, Illinois Wesleyan beat Carthage 4-1 in one semi-final while Wheaton was defeating Augustana 2-0.
