2003 PRESEASON WOMEN'S SOCCER POLL

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – If the predicting powers of the coaches in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin are correct, Wheaton will make it a perfect 10 for 10 in women’s soccer. The Thunder of head coach Pete Felske has assumed the early role of favorite in the CCIW according to a vote of league coaches.

Wheaton, which has lost just one match in conference history and has rolled up a record of 54-1 in league play, has won the first nine CCIW championships. The Thunder received six first place votes and a total of 48 points after posting an overall record of 18-3-3 in 2002 and a 7-0 mark in the league. Wheaton also won the first ever conference tournament in women’s soccer with a 2-1 victory over Illinois Wesleyan in the championship match on November 9.

The Titans were 13-4-2 overall a year ago and went 4-2-1 in the league and they pulled in 43 points and two first place votes to finish second in the pre-season voting. Elmhurst, the only team in the league with a victory over Wheaton, achieved back in 2001, is solidly entrenched in third with 36 points. The Bluejays were 16-5-0 overall and 6-1 in the CCIW in 2002.

Augustana (13-8-0 & 4-3) picked up 31 points in the voting to check in at fourth place. Carthage, which actually tied with Wheaton for the 2001 title, is in fifth with 27 points. The Lady Reds were 13-4-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference last year. North Park (9-8-0 & 1-6) had 18 points in sixth while Millikin (5-10-2 & 2-5-0) was in seventh with 13 points. North Central (7-13-0 & 0-7) had eight points in eighth place.
