Illinois Wesleyan Sweeps Soccer Player of the Week Honors

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Lyndsay O’Brien and Mark Opal of Illinois Wesleyan were named soccer players of the week in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Wednesday after their performances during the previous week of competition.

O’Brien, a senior midfielder from Peoria, Ill., had a goal and an assist in helping Illinois Wesleyan to a 1-1 start against ranked competition last weekend. O’Brien assisted on a goal in a 2-1 win over preseason No. 42 Hope and the assist made her the sole career leader in assists at the school. On Sat., Sept. 2, she scored the team’s only goal in a 2-1 loss to preseason No. 31 ranked Calvin.

Opal, a senior midfielder from Wheaton, Ill., scored three goals in helping the Illinois Wesleyan men’s soccer team to a 2-0 start in 2006. Opal got a pair of goals in the Titans’ 6-2 win at Knox on Sept. 1, then scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Titans’ 2-1 win over Webster.

Note: The CCIW soccer players of the week will be announced every Tuesday until the end of the regular season. This week’s winners were announced on Wednesday due to the Labor Day holiday.
