2003 PRESEASON MEN'S SOCCER POLL

After sharing title each of last two years, Wheaton is looking to win championship by itself in 2003 and CCIW coaches give Thunder the nod

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE sent 08/05/03

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – Wheaton has been a dominant force in men’s soccer ever since the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin began sponsoring the sport in 1988. Since that time the Thunder has captured 13 of 15 titles, including the last eight in a row. However, Wheaton shared the last two CCIW championships – with Millikin in 2001 and Augustana in 2002 – and the Thunder would like nothing better than to be alone atop the league standings in 2003. According to a vote of conference coaches that could well be the case.

The voting is in for the pre-season poll and Wheaton is the clear-cut favorite to win the championship in 2003. Veteran head coach Joe Bean’s team picked up 36 points and six first place votes after finishing the 2002 season with a 17-4-2 overall record and a 5-0-1 mark in the CCIW.

Augustana, which tied Wheaton a year ago with an identical 5-0-1 conference record, is solidly in second place with 31 points and one first place vote. Just a year ago the Vikings were predicted to finish sixth in the league standings. The Vikings of head coach Scott Mejia went 16-3-1 overall.

North Park (9-6-3 & 2-4) had 22 points for third place while Millikin (8-9-0 & 3-3-0) piled up 21 points in fourth place. Carthage (8-12-1 & 2-3-1) checks in with 18 points for fifth and Illinois Wesleyan (6-12-0 & 1-5-0) was sixth with 12 points. North Central (6-12-0 & 1-5-0) was in seventh with seven points. Elmhurst is the only member of the CCIW that does not compete in men’s soccer.

Last year the CCIW resurrected its post season tournament and Wheaton won with a 5-1 victory over Millikin in the championship game.
