FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE sent 08/30/01
ROCK ISLAND, Illinois - The Wheaton Thunder has won 11 out of a possible 13 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's soccer championships since the league began sponsoring the sport in 1988. According to a vote of the league coaches, that streak should move to 12 of the last 14 by the time the 2001 season is over.
Veteran head coach Joe Bean's squad was 13-4-3 last year and 5-0-1 in the CCIW with the lone blemish in league play being a 0-0 tie at Augustana. The Thunder picked up 35 points and five first place votes in the pre-season poll. Millikin, which was 15-1-1 in 2000 and 5-1 in the CCIW was a solid second with 30 points and the other first place vote.
Carthage (23), Illinois Wesleyan (20), Augustana (17), North Park 14 and North Central rounded out the pre-season selections.
Each coach votes for the six other schools in the league that sponsor men's soccer, but is not allowed to vote for his or her own team.
