Illinois Wesleyan Wins Fifth Straight Women's Golf Championship (10/7/06)
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Behind a two-day score of 150 by Illinois Wesleyan’s Taylor Paskell, including a one-under 71 on the final day, the Titans captured their fifth straight CCIW women’s golf title Saturday at Prairie Vista Golf Course.

Paskell earned medalist honors for the tournament, the second time in three years she has done so. Illinois Welseyan finished with a two-day score of 644 to not only win the conference title, but earn the CCIW’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in the spring.

Augustana (681), Millikin (696), Wheaton (704), Carthage (715), North Central (755) and North Park (847) rounded out the team scoring.

In addition to Paskell, the Titans also had three golfers finish in the top 10, including Kristi Katz (85+79=164) and Alison Mayer (86+78=164) finishing tied for third, and last year’s individual champion Andrea Johanns (83+83=166), who finished tied for fifth with Augustana’s Danielle Detelich (78+88=166).

Millikin’s Lydia Lindemann placed second with a score of 161 (79+82), while Wheaton’s Brittany Bronson placed seventh (84+83=167). Abigail Johnson of Augustana finished eighth (86+82=168), while teammate Rachel Gahn was ninth (85+85=170). Elizabeth Zaske (89+82=171) of North Central and Shanna Agner (85+86=171) of Carthage finished tied for 10th.

2006 CCIW Women’s Golf Championship Preview (9/28/06)

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- When the women’s golfers in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) tee up for the conference championship Friday and Saturday, they will be doing so at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, Ill., the first time this course will host the championship.

Of the 10 championships that have occurred dating back to 1996, seven have taken place at the Pontiac Elks Club in Pontiac, Ill., including 2005. But Prairie Vista offers a new challenge for CCIW golfers. Prairie Vista is a Par 72, 5,832-yard course (2,980 yards on the front nine, 2,852-yards on the back nine).

All eight member schools will be competing at this year’s championships, including Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois Wesleyan, Millikin, North Central, North Park and Wheaton. The winner of the championships will earn the CCIW’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships May 8-11, 2007 at the Mission Inn Golf & Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

Illinois Wesleyan is gunning for its fifth straight team title, having won every championship since 2002 under head coach Kathy Niepagen. Senior Andrea Johanns won the individual title last season and returns to the championship with Taylor Paskell and Kristi Katz. The Titans recently finished third at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational, held at the Prairie Woods Golf Course in Avalon, Wis. Illinois Wesleyan achieved a team score of 674 as Paskell finished tied for seventh with a two-day score of 162 while Kristi Katz placed 12th with a score of 164.

Carthage, which placed second at last year’s championships, finished 10th in the same UW-Whitewater Invitational as Shanna Agner fnished tied for 40th with a score of 182 (+38). Agner placed 18th at last season’s women’s golf championship (187). Senior and three-year letterwinner Chelsea Kater finished ninth at last year’s championship with a score of 179, earning her all-conference honors.

New coach Jay Martin and the Wheaton women’s golf team has put forth a strong showing during the 2006 season, finishing second at the Elmhurst College’s Bluejay Classic, second at the Carthage Invitational, and first place at North Central’s Cardinal Classic respectively. Senior Megan Turnball finished 12th at the conference championship last season. She finished tied for fifth at the Bluejay Classic, and finished third at the Carthage Invitational. Jenny Speckman was the Thunder’s recent top finisher, tying for second place at the Cardinal Classic.

Augustana, Millikin and North Central placed fourth, fifth and sixth at the championships last season. Augustana freshman Danielle Detelich won the individual title at the North Central Cardinal Classic with a score of 84. Millikin senior and three-year letterwinner Lydia Lindemann placed third at the championships last season with a score of 171 and she tied for 10th (163) at the UW-Whitewater Invitational. North Central placed third at its own invitational on Sept. 26, as Bobbie Lamothe was the top finisher for the Cardinals. North Park and Elmhurst did not field a full team at last year’s championships.
