CCIW Names Kniss, Andrew and Day Football Players of the Week
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Kam Kniss from North Central, along with Trey Andrew and Andrew Day of Wheaton were named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Football Players of the Week for their performances Saturday, Sept. 10.
Kniss, a junior quarterback from Lanark, Ill., completed 20 of 29 passes for 386 yards and four TDs in a 44-27 win over Benedictine. That brought his career passing yardage total to 4,545 to break the previous school mark of 4,211 held by Luther Selbo, a 1967 graduate of North Central. Kniss also tied the single-game mark for TDs thrown in a game (also held by four other players) and the career mark for completions with 318 (also held by Selbo).
Andrew, a senior defensive end from Vidalia, Ga., anchored an impressive effort by the Thunder defensive line in Wheaton’s 23-16 win at Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday. The Thunder recorded seven quarterback sacks and allowed only 33 net rushing yards. Andrew made four total tackles including three solos, but he was in the Gusties’ backfield much of the afternoon as he recorded 3-1/2 tackles for lost yardage of 14 yards. Andrew also had two (-10 yards) of Wheaton’s seven sacks in the victory.
Day, a senior from Shoreview, Minn., made three field goals under windy conditions at Hollingsworth Field in St. Peter, Minn. Day kicked a 26-yard field goal with 7:02 left in the first half and booted a 27-yard field goal with 4:10 left in the first half to help keep the Thunder in the game, trailing 7-6 late in the first half. Day also kicked a 20-yard field goal in the third quarter to single-handedly give the Thunder its first nine points of the game before the Wheaton offense managed to put two fourth quarter touchdowns on the board.
The CCIW football season continues next Saturday, Sept. 17 as Carthage travels to Benedictine and North Central heads to Augsburg. Elmhurst faces the University of Chicago on the road, while Millikin travels to Franklin and North Park travels to Eureka. Wheaton hosts Greenville.
