Augustana Sweeps Football Player of the Week Honors

NAPERVILLE , Ill. -- Mike Guzman and Brad Monier of Augustana were named players of the week in CCIW football Sunday after their performances earned their team a victory over Wheaton Saturday afternoon.

Guzman, a senior fullback from Oregon, Ill., led the Vikings in rushing during a 17-14 victory against Wheaton on Saturday at Ericson Field in Rock Island, Ill. Guzman gained 122 yards on 14 attempts and scored one touchdown against the Thunder. The touchdown was a 76-yard burst up the middle and it came on the first play of the last series of the first quarter, giving Augustana a 14-0 lead. Guzman also sealed the victory when he gained three yards on a third and three situation from his own 32 with the game clock under a minute and the Thunder without any timeouts.

Monier, sophomore safety from Walnut, Ill., finished the game against Wheaton with four total tackles (two solo and two assists). He also forced and recovered a fumble on the same play when he hit Chaz Black, the leading rusher in the CCIW and the 11th best in NCAA Division III, at the five-yard line on Wheaton's first drive of the game. On the next possession Monier intercepted a pass from Thunder quarterback Jeremy Chupp at the Augustana 32 and returned it 30 yards to the Wheaton 38 to set up Augustana's first score of the game. Monier also had a pass deflection.

The CCIW football season continues next Saturday, Oct. 21 as Millikin travels to Carthage, while Augustana faces North Central in Naperville. Illinois Wesleyan hosts North Park, while Wheaton faces Elmhurst at home.
