Elmhurst’s Veldhuis & Carthage’s Januszewski Named Football Players of the Week in CCIW
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Blake Veldhuis of Elmhurst and Mark Januszewski of Carthage were named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Players of the Week Sunday after their performances in the opening week of competition.
Veldhuis, a sophomore wide receiver from Mt. Pleasant, Mich., hauled in eight passes for a career-high 115 yards in the Bluejays’ 34-0 win over Benedictine on Saturday afternoon. In addition to his 115 receiving yards, Veldhuis also caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mike LeFluer that put his team up 21-0 midway through the third quarter.
Januszewski, a junior inside linebacker from Deerfield, Ill., turned in two key defensive plays in the final minutes of the Red Men’s come-from-behind, 10-6 win at Carroll (Wis.) on Saturday. Januszewski collected a loose ball with 10:23 left in the fourth quarter and ran it back 20 yards for a go-ahead touchdown. Carthage stopped the final Carroll drive with less than two minutes remaining on back-to-back sacks, the second by Januszewski.
The non-conference portion of the CCIW schedule continues next Saturday, Sept. 9 as Carthage travels to Lakeland and Augustana hosts Baldwin-Wallace. Illinois Wesleyan hosts Olivet, while Millikin faces Ohio Northern at home. Wheaton opens its season at home against Albion, while North Park begins the 2006 campaign on the road against Benedictine. Finally, North Central begins the season by hosting Concordia (Wis.), while Elmhurst is idle before returning to the field on Sept. 16 to face the University of Chicago on its home turf.
